When choosing what surface material is best for your asphalt pavement, there are a few major disadvantages of asphalt you need to consider.

If you have driven down the street, you have most likely done so on asphalt pavement. It is used to pave roads, freeways, jogging pathways, parking lots and even driveways.

Though asphalt is relatively cheap in comparison to concrete or other mediums, it has its disadvantages that should be considered.

#1. Care and Maintenance

Asphalt Pavement requires more maintenance than concrete to ensure long lasting solutions. Asphalt surface area need to be resealed in every three to five years in order to prevent cracks or depressions in the pavement. For smoother drive, sealers must be applied to the cracks and then the surface area should be left alone for two to three days before cars can drive at first glance. Resealing the asphalt surface area in every three to five years will cost both, money and time.

#2. Cracks

As we know that asphalt cracks are ugly and can get expensive if it is left unrepaired or untreated for long period of time. When the Asphalt is not properly laid, then it lead to more cracks and breaks in the pavement. Some of the pavement issues such as uneven pavement surfaces, inadequate mixing and laying pavement over previous cracks are all reasons responsible for cracks to occur in the surface area. In order to prevent cracks and breaks in the pavement, asphalt crack sealing can be done to prevent water and ice from seeping into the asphalt surface causing it to crumble.

#3. Construction

In order for traditional asphalt to be used, it must first be heated to 250 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit so that asphalt is softened.  At these temperatures asphalt is fluid and will bond with the surface if it is applied. A tack layer of asphalt should be put on pavement to make sure that there is a strong bonding between the layers. Immediately after asphalt is poured it must be covered with sand or aggregate in order for it to stick properly. Once the compaction is done, the rollers can be used for perfect compaction of asphalt levels. Substantial training of installers is required.

#4. Environmental IssuesDisadvantages of Asphalt

Asphalt is petroleum crude oil based product. In the process of asphalt creation, hydrocarbons are released which are responsible for leading pollution. “Coal Tar” is the most commonly used asphalt for roadways and parking lots. Cutback asphalts are used to create asphalt cements, which can also be used in parking lots and driveways. Cutback asphalts emit a higher amount of hydrocarbons than emulsion asphalts.

#5. EquipmentDisadvantages of Asphalt

Asphalt Patching and Repairs requires heavy equipment to install, no matter the type used. Distributor trucks, sand spreaders, paving equipment and graders are all needed in order to lay asphalt surfaces properly and smoothly. This type of equipment can be rented in small-scale form for a driveway project, but it is costly. Large-scale projects require heavier equipment, which can be cost-prohibitive.

  1. Thanks for the reminder that it’s important to also have measures against cracking when planning to get asphalt paving services. I’d like to get my home’s exterior repaved. It would be best to find the right contractors for that in order to make it easier to plan out a timeline for a project like that.
